Safetymaking | Ray Madrigal | On display January 17-Febuary 18 | Reception and Artist Talk: January 23, 4:30pm | Carlson Tower Gallery
Safety making is a pursuit relevant to all people, but it is an especially urgent process for those with few to no easy assurances – namely, those who exist within the vast gray areas of race, gender, sexuality, class, immigrant status, and ability. Those in the gray quickly learn that objects of supposed safety can abruptly turn violent; what protects one party can very well harm another. Through drawn and sculptural elements, Safetymaking probes our daily attempts to delineate interior protected space from an external and potentially threatening world.
