Latino and Latin American Studies Minor

Students interested in broadening their knowledge of Latin American history along with Hispanic and Latino life in the United States can minor in Latino and Latin American Studies alongside any major. In particular, this interdisciplinary program complements fields of study such as , , , , and .

As a Latino and Latin American Studies minor, you’ll study the rich and multifaceted cultures, literature, religions, and histories of the Latino people. The program seeks to nurture your intellectual, social, and political development through the consideration of the Latino experience.

North Park’s Department of Latin American Studies and Initiatives, as part of our , promotes the richness of the Latino peoples and culture. Our programming offers social and educational engagement with the many facets of U.S. and global Latino life.

At North Park, we aspire to educate students about Latino cultures, promote camaraderie between the campus and Latino communities, and help you grow deeper in your faith. Our curriculum, sponsored lectures and topics conferences, and partnerships with Chicago organizations, artists, and exhibitors will give you unique opportunities to engage in Latino studies.

Minor Requirements

To meet the requirements for this minor, students must complete the following:

  • Prerequisite of Basic Spanish II (SPAN 1020), or equivalent
  • 18 semester hours beyond SPAN 1020 or equivalent, with core coursework in Latino/Latin American studies, biblical and theological studies, communications, sociology, and Spanish
  • A portfolio submitted to the program director that includes a self-assessment, reflection on their educational experiences, and samples of work from their completed courses

Some coursework for this minor may be done through the North Park , and the Council for the Christian Colleges & Universities Latin American Studies Program in San José, Costa Rica.

This minor is not a standalone program; students must complete a at North Park in order to graduate from the University.
