Faculty Spotlight: Jon Peterson
A native of Minnesota, Dr. Jon Peterson graduated from Wheaton College in 1994 with a degree in political science but decided to teach at North Park because of the opportunities the city offers its students. He encourages them to ask questions, get to know their communities, and get involved.
I tell them, wherever you want to make a difference, youre going to run into a government, Peterson said. Even if you want to change something through a community organization, you cant do it without dealing with the government, so learn how the system works.
Internships
Students who major in public policy are strongly encouraged to complete an internship. North Park’s Politics and Government Department, along with the Center for Civic Engagement, have developed partnerships with many organizations, including:
- The offices of U.S. Senators Richard Durbin and Tammy Duckworth
- State of Illinois’ Office of the Governor
- City of Chicago’s Office of the Mayor and Department of Housing
- State of Illinois Treasurer’s Office
- A variety of Washington, D.C.-based interest groups and organizations, such as World Vision, the International Justice Mission, and The Daniel Initiative
