Why Study Biochemistry?
Biochemistry is a rapidly expanding discipline that focuses on the study of chemical processes and transformations associated with living organisms. Ideal for students who enjoy working at the crossroads of biology and chemistry, this major offers interdisciplinary learning that will prepare you for tomorrow’s careers. Biochemistry majors will have an excellent foundation for work in many areas of research, and because of the relevance of biochemistry in modern medicine, they will be prepared for professional programs in health-related disciplines as well.
Faculty Spotlight:
Dr. Sunshine Silver
Dr. Sunshine Silver encourages her students to work together and share ideas to solve problems. As faculty advisor for the Chemistry Club, Dr. Silver also works with students as they identify careers in areas that they’re passionate about.
Research Opportunities
As a biochemistry major, you will have a number of opportunities to conduct original research with our incredible faculty, through industry internships across Chicago and summer research opportunities like the National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates program.
State-of-the-Art Facilities
In our modern, first-class chemistry labs, analytical instrumentation and integrated technology set the stage for learning. Highlights include:
- Shimadzu GC-MS
- Microwave Synthesis Unit
- Perkin Elmer Spectrum 100 FTIR
- 300 MHz Bruker NMR
- Ocean Optics CCD-array UV-Vis
- Total Reflection X-Ray Fluorescence
Individual Attention
One of the greatest benefits of studying chemistry at North Park is the personalized attention and support you will receive from your professors. Classes are small, which means direct interaction with professors and classmates. We take great pride in the success of our students, and work hard to create a student-centered, supportive, and fun atmosphere in the chemistry department.
Prepare for Graduate School
With the Medical College Admission Test’s (MCAT) increasing focus on biochemistry, this major serves as an important foundation for medical and other health profession schools. Our program prepares healthcare practitioners in an era of fast-growing demand, equipping students to succeed in a variety of graduate programs.
Interesting Classes
Master fundamental chemistry and biochemistry concepts, as well as laboratory skills, including observation, analysis, and manipulation of biochemical reactions and processes in courses that include:
- Biochemistry
- Advanced Biochemistry
- Analytical Chemistry
- Chemistry Ethics, Skills, and Professional Practices
Chemistry & Pre-pharmacy Clubs
Students with a general interest in chemistry or who are interested in becoming pharmacists are invited to join either or both the Chemistry and Pre-pharmacy clubs. The Chemistry Club regularly organizes outings and social events that bring students together in the name of increasing knowledge and having fun. Pre-pharmacy Club members plan service projects and training events which provide first-hand experience and allow students to work together outside of the classroom.
